Benefits of Infrared Sauna Therapy

Infrared light (experienced as heat) is the invisible part of the sun's spectrum with the ability to penetrate human tissue to produce a host of health and anti-aging benefits, minus the dangerous UV-rays. An infrared sauna heats the body directly rather than simply warming the air around you like a traditional sauna, it raises the core body temperature to produce a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where most toxins reside.

Infrared light is divided into near, middle, and far regions that are based on the different sizes in infrared wavelengths. Near-infrared levels are best for wound healing, skin health, and increased immune function. Middle-infrared levels are ideal for increasing circulation and promoting muscle relaxation. Far-infrared levels are used primarily for detoxification purposes. Unlike many infrared saunas which offer only far-infrared light, our full range infrared sauna allows you to receive the benefits of all three light ranges.

Detoxing the body - Heat increases blood flow by expanding the capillaries that carry blood. Raising the body’s core temperature in turn produces sweat to help regulate the body. When the body is heated internally and blood is flowing it also increases oxygenation and regeneration of the blood. In turn, sweating not only helps to cool the body but also purges the body of heavy metals and other toxins. In particular, toxins stored in the fatty tissues.

Reduce Stress - Unlike traditional steam saunas that operate at extremely high temperatures, infrared is a gentle, soothing, and therapeutic heat. Sit back and enjoy an invigorating deep tissue sweat that will leave you feeling refreshed after each session.

Pain Relief - Infrared heat penetrates tissue, joints, and muscles to relieve anything from minor aches and pains to chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Pain management professionals incorporate infrared heat therapy into treatment plans to decrease pain and muscle spasms and to speed up recovery time.

Weight Loss - Studies have shown that an average infrared sauna session can burn as many as 600 calories! As your body is working hard to cool itself, an elevation in your heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate.

Lower Blood Pressure - Infrared saunas induce a deep sweat to make the heart pump faster, which in turn increases blood flow, lowers blood pressure and helps circulation.

Improve Circulation - Heating the muscles with infrared rays produces an increase in blood flow similar to that seen during exercise. Regular infrared sauna use can significantly stimulate blood flow up to twice the normal rate.

Anti-Aging - The near infrared wavelength is the most effective wavelength for healing the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. Near infrared treatments stimulate collagen production to reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone.

Skin Conditions and Wound Healing - By sweating regularly and profusely, toxins are eliminated through the sebaceous glands instead of them coming out via dead skin cells. Infrared light enhances the skin’s healing process by promoting faster cell regeneration and human tissue growth. Human cell growth increases to repair wounds and prevent infection.

Improve Cell Health and Autoimmune Support - Infrared therapy stimulates the circulatory system and more fully oxygenates the body’s cells. The increase in body temperature during an infrared session stimulates the body’s natural immune response. This increased blood circulation means more toxins flow from the cellular level to the skin’s surface to improve cell health, aid in muscle recovery and strengthen the immune system.

FAQ - Here are some answers to commonly asked questions we hear from clients.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INFRARED SAUNAS VS TRADITIONAL STEAM SAUNAS?
1. Infrared actually heats the body directly. Traditional saunas use heat to warm the air around you.
2. Infrared sauna temps range from 120-140° F. Traditional sauna’s range is 150-190° F
3. Infrared sauna is a dry heat and low humidity. Traditional saunas produce steam and are higher in humidity.
4. In an infrared sauna you sweat 80-85% water and 15-20% heavy metals and toxins. In steam saunas you sweat 97% water and only 3% heavy metals and toxins.

HOW LONG IS A SAUNA SESSION?
All sessions are 30 minutes. You can shorten your session at any point by stepping out of the sauna, however, to receive maximum benefit we recommend you stay in at least 30 minutes. It typically takes 10-15 minutes for your body to really begin feeling the heat, and 20 minutes to begin producing a good sweat.

IS THE SAUNA PRIVATE?
Absolutely. You are in a private room allowing you to sweat, stretch out and relax, in total privacy.

WHAT DO I WEAR FOR MY INFRARED SAUNA SESSION?
Good question. We recommend something minimal such as your bathing suit. You want to be able to sweat freely since your pores are open. And no footwear in the sauna. Did you know the soles of your feet have a tremendous number of sweat glands? In fact, the feet, along with the hands and the scalp are the three ‘sweatiest’ parts of your body. Although rich in sweat glands, these parts of your body rarely sweat enough to produce dripping sweat; that only occurs under extremely hot conditions or during vigorous exercise. So, no shoes, our saunas have floor heaters to aid in the detox process!

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHILE IN THE SAUNA?
Sitting in a sauna is a great time to just kick back, relax and unwind. Breathe. We provide music & magazines. Feel free to bring your book or own magazine you’ve been meaning to catch up on. It is best not to sleep while in the sauna.

CAN I BRING MY PHONE, TABLET OR LAPTOP IN THE SAUNA?
The sauna gets hot so we do not recommend it.

DO YOU PROVIDE SHOWERS?
We do not. It is recommended to wait 30-60 min. before showering to allow you to get the most of out of your sweat session, this enables your pores to stay open and continue flushing toxins.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR MY CORE BODY TEMPERATURE TO RETURN TO NORMAL?
It is normal for the body to take as much as an hour to return to its regular temperature. This is why the body continues to sweat after the sauna is finished.

More Frequently Asked Questions

HOW OFTEN CAN I USE AN INFRARED SAUNA?
It depends on your personal health and wellness goals. We recommend daily sessions for an aggressive weight loss and concentrated approach to detoxification. 3 times a week for a steady detoxifying regimen. Try to sauna immediately following your workout or yoga class to see the best results and feel absolutely amazing. Also, sauna’ing prior to a massage or bodywork session is a great way to warm and loosen up the tissues.

WILL I STILL BE BURNING CALORIES THROUGH THE DAY AFTER MY SESSION?
Yes. By increasing your basal metabolic rate, your sauna session has lasting energy expenditure even after your session is over.

I DON’T USUALLY SWEAT A LOT, WILL THE INFRARED SAUNA STILL BE OK FOR ME?
For many people with varying levels of toxicity (chemical, heavy metal, pesticide) it may take between 5 and 10 sessions to begin to see volume of sweat increased. Hydration is key to enhancing the detoxification and sweating and will greatly improve the sweat volume in those who have trouble at first. Individuals working up to a deep, profuse sweat will still be receiving the benefits of therapeutic infrared rays and detoxification through urine, bowels and hair.

CAN I USE THE SAUNA IF I HAVE IMPLANTS?
Metal pins, rods, artificial joints and silicone implants (ear, nose, breast, etc.) any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and while they may become warm they are not not heated by this light waves. We do advise however you consult with your physician or the implant manufacturer prior to using an infrared sauna.

ARE THE SAUNAS SANITARY?
Yes. We provide clean towels and we sanitize each sauna after every use. Also, infrared light kills all bacteria and any airborne germs. Many medical devices are sterilized using Infrared light. A clean and relaxing environment is guaranteed with each session.

WILL I LOSE WATER WEIGHT OR FAT?
Water weight will be sweated out during the sauna session, which typically is regained upon re-hydration. But the calories burned are real. As you relax in the gentle heat of our saunas, your body is actually hard at work pumping blood (increased heart rate), increasing circulation and producing sweat to cool you down – hence the calorie burn! According to a Journal of the American Medical Association report, in a single sauna session you may burn as many calories as you would running for 30 minutes. So you lose weight – not just water! This is a great way to compliment exercise and a healthy diet.

The session will operate at a lower temperature, and can only use the sauna for no more than 15 minutes at a time.
